The campground in 29 Palms supposedly has free wireless, but at least while we were there the AP showed up only sporadicly. Thus, no access to the Internet until now. Here's a wrap-up of the previous days:
On the second day, we drove from Morro Dunes directly to 29 Palms, which is a journey of about 380 miles. The traffic in LA was quite heavy, we lost two hours due to the traffic jam.
The trip through Joshua Tree was very scenic. We walked some short hikes: the Arch Rock nature trail (short but informative), Cholla Cactus Garden (wonderful plants), the area around Split Rock, then Skull Rock (got lost on the trail back and walked along the street instead) and Barker Dam (even more beautiful than Hidden Valley.) We had to skip Hidden Valley, though, to get to Keys Point while there was still some light. The wind was very high, we nearly got blown off the mountain, and due to clouds on the horizon no beautiful sunset this time. But even with less then perfect weather still very interesting. I just love Joshua Tree.

When we arrived again at the campground the wind had calmed down and we set up the fire for BBQ. Still quite cold, but at least it wasn't freezing. With the right coal (lesson learned from previous years: don't buy "just lit the bag" coal) the steaks were excellent.
Today, we drove to Williams on the Historic Route 66, with exception to the part that goes through high mountains. I introduced my parents to the world of Arby's. Their stuff is very unusual for us Europeans, but I actually like it. And so do my parents. The most interesting observation today was how different the vegetation gets the further east we drove. Also quite funny is how the bag of potato chips inflated like a balloon. Granted, we bought it at sea level and we are now approximately 7000 ft high...
