I just bought the flight tickets to Anthrocon. Unfortunately with Air France via CDG as everything else from NUE is terribly expensive, but if they mess up my baggage I'll survive the few days without it...
My carry-on is a camera bag which doubles as a backpack. Camera gear in the bottom part, vitamins, medications and basic hygiene stuff in the top, plus a change of underwear and some extra socks. All fits neatly in a package I can slip on and carry hands-free. IIRC it was around $35. Very handy as just a camera bag, too. :-)
I've had something similar with me in Utah this March. The backpack is a bit more expensive (because it has a label which reads "Lowepro") and has an additional compartment for a laptop. I basically pack the same things into my carry-on luggage, plus a small squashable towel. The US customs officer in Denver was wondering about it, until I explained that I never travel without a towel. It took a few seconds, but then he recognized that reference. :-) Pretty cool and friendly personnel there.
