Roadtrip 2008, Day 9

What a day! We went to Arches National Park today and did some hikes in the snow. First, we walked up to the upper viewpoint of Delicate Arch. It was a bit more difficult due to the icy patches on the trail, but doable. We didn't dare to hike up to the arch itself, though.

Next, we tried to get to Broken Arch from Devil's Garden Campground, however we considered climbing a rock covered with 1' of snow too dangerous. At least we saw Tapestry Arch... Landscape Arch was easier to reach, but the trail to Double O Arch was also too icy. Still a very nice hike. Pine Tree Arch and Tunnel Arch are quite beautiful as well.

Finally, The Windows. Easy trail, very nice view. North and South window are best photographed in the evening, Turret Arch in the morning.

All in all some very nice but exhausting hikes in the snow and an overwhelming scenery. Not just the arches: the whole area is just wonderful, especially in the snow.

That's perhaps the reason why the clerk at the shop of the visitor center, who's originally from Delmenhorst, Germany, moved from San Francisco to Moab a couple of years ago. She still loves San Fran very much, but adores the Southwest of Utah even more. I can perfectly understand her. Moab is perhaps the only place in Utah I can remotely imagine living in. So much different from everything else... Of course, San Fran is still the only place outside Europe I would want to live given the right circumstances. Then again, this love works best as a long-distance relationship. I'll keep it that way.
