Back to the Future

I had no further problems with the flight, even the security screening took half the time (no wonder, with the double amount of open screening stations...) But I'm still annoyed as I have to drop the one-day roadtrip to Monument Valley due to the delays...

Got my baggage in SLC (it was indeed there, yay!), got the rental car (a blue Ford Focus, much better than the models from a few years ago) and drove to Provo where I fetched the keys for the company condo. Afterwards, I went shopping for groceries. Also bought a crate of Heineken, just to check the reaction of the cashier. She wanted a photo ID (should I be honoured or insulted?) and I gave her my German National ID card which she tried to comprehend for about a minute. Surprisingly, most stores do accept the German ID card without a second look, but at last I found some which doesn't... :-) Gave her my passport, which of course has the same kind of card in there, which left her puzzled even more. Eventually, she gave the card back to me without further questions.

I brought the groceries to the condo, re-packed my baggage for a two day trip and started my weekend program. I drove to Cedar Breaks National Monument. The SR 143 is indeed quite scenic, the monument itself just has one vista point, though. Despite the arctic wind up there and one meter of snow on the parking lot (thankfully, they had two plowed parking spaces) I made a couple of photos.

Unfortunately, the SR 148 to SR 14 is not only closed in winter, but also blocked by two meters of snow, so I proceeded on the SR 143, which is very lovely even in Winter. Best time to visit this area would be May to June, I guess. Unless you are into winter sports, that is. By the way, I wouldn't try to drive the section between the monument and the I 15 with an RV, it has 12,3% grades, which probably would be a problem for such a vehicle.

After visiting Cedar Breaks Nat'l Monument, I proceeded to Kanab and checked into the Aiken's Lodge motel, which is not only affordable ($ 38 excl. tax), but they also live up to their advertising -- the rooms are indeed cleaner as those of some high-priced hotels I've been to. It has kept its 1950th style, but apparently is freshly renovated.

Opposed to the Novell condo, the motel even has working wireless. Have to go pestering IS&T tomorrow.
