Lots of Sand and Zion Nat'l Park

Despite getting on the road late yesterday, I actually did everything I had in mind for my (shortened) weekend program. First, I went to Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park to hike through the dunes and shoot some photos. Here's one:

Afterwards I drove to Zion National Park. Lots of people there, I actually wished the shuttle bus service was already running. It's hard to get a parking spot especially at the heads of the easier trails...

I started with a hike to Canyon Overlook, got a map and a Folkmanis raccoon puppet at the visitor center, drove to Temple of Sinawava, turned around, went hiking the Kayenta, Upper Emerald Pool, Middle Emerald Pools and Grotto trails.

Next, a second attempt at the Temple. I actually got a parking spot and walked the Riverside Walk. Very nice, but also very tricky to catch the atmosphere with a photo. It's not really a trail, as it is completely paved. No wonder it is so crowded... Finally, I took the Weeping Rock trail, also paved but a bit steep.

Using hiking poles was a good idea. They in fact help me to walk upright, which is good for my back. Additionally, they also help me keep balance and security. With them, I can walk faster and save a lot of energy. No problems with joints and ligaments this time.

Talking about hiking equipment, or rather the lack off: why on earth do so many people go on hikes in the mountains with normal sneakers and even slippers? Don't they know the risks or do they just not care about their lives?

Today and for the rest of the week I'll be in the Novell Provo office, afterwards I'll be working on Brainshare. This is a business trip after all...
