Bardentreffen 2005

I guess it is becoming something like a tradition: Every year, when the Bardentreffen in Nürnberg takes place I invite a couple of friends to come over and visit this amazing free open-air festival with me. This year, doco, Kayjay, lynard_ stayed at my apartment for some nights, with Ailurus, Malcom, sibserag, thecrow_ and Edelweiß joining us at the festival.

The Friday started with Kayjay and lynard_ arriving. After a cup of tea we started to watch the first concert, Calexico on the main stage. doco, SibSerag and TheCrow joined us at the Hauptmarkt. Unfortunately, the band had to abend the concert after four songs due to a large thunderstorm and pouring rain. Luckily nobody was hurt by the flying beer stand umbrellas and tables, but we were soaking wet afterwards. Guess I'll have to buy the CD to hear the rest.

Saturday was sort of disappointing, musically wise. Moïna, a German singing teacher who's living in Paris, was mainly singing cover versions of old pop and rock songs. Herrn Stumphes Zieh & Zupf Kapelle with their Swabian music comedy program was much better, but it started raining again and thus it was only have the fun it could have been. Next stop: Breabach. Very nice Scottisch folk music: two pipes, a rythm guitar and a fiddle. But somehow I wasn't quite in the mood for that very traditional style. At night, the Flying Pickets were on main stage. If I had paid money for that concert I would have been deeply disappointed. But since it was for free I just want to say is that they had too much routine, presented boring arrangements of well-known pop songs and their voices did not quite blend. Excellent solo musicians do not necessarily make a good band.

All in all the Saturday probably could have been a complete disappointment, but there was one gig which saved the day: the Old Blind Dogs. Yay! That's how I like Scottish folk.

And finally, Sunday. What a difference! Starting with the very good tempered 24indigo who played very relaxed Lounge music which never got boring, continued by Norwegian and Scottish folk performed by Kelpie (Kerstin Blodig and Ian Melrose) who were likewise very good humoured (however, I would have prefered Ian to play more guitar. But then again, I didn't knew he was such an excellent flute player) and finishing with Scottish folk rock by Capercaillie -- and boy, do they rock the house! -- this was exactly how I like a day at the Bardentreffen.

Many thanks to the Team of the Bardentreffen, the bands and of course my very dear guests for the wonderful weekend! I will certainly not miss it next year!
