New music on the shelf (3)

I bought several CDs recently:

Lambchop — OH (ohio)

The brand-new album by Kurt Wagner (from Nashville, TN, despite the German name) comes as an extra with the current issue of the German edition of the Rolling Stone magazine, including jewel case and booklet. Compared to his previous album Damaged, the songs are less introverted and more folk influenced. They sometimes remind me of Leonard Cohen's music, though it certainly is Kurt's own style of writing. Highly recommended for a sunny autumn afternoon.

Alexander James Adams — A Familiar Promise

Finally, a really good album again from my favourite folk musician. Alec's voice has improved very much (and if you heard him at Eurofurence: it is even better now.) The new songs on the record mix very well with the old ones. The only complaint I have is the somewhat mediocre production quality. But I can definitely recommend this album even to non-die-hard-fans. A solid but fresh folk album.

Paul Roland — Re Animator

In Germany, British writer and musician Paul Roland had a small radio hit with Walter the Occultist from his 1987 album Cabinet of Curiosities. Twenty years later, his current album Re Animator was published in Germany. The good news: not much has changed. The bad news: that is exactly the problem of the record. I'm missing the surprises, the experiments. Don't get me wrong, it is not a bad album at all. It is quite good, in fact. But something is missing: the playfulness. Until I came to the final track Cthullu. Symphonic rock at its best! The German edition comes with three non-notable remixes of some songs, and more importantly a second CD that contains a best-of compilation of Roland's older work.

T'Pau — Bridge of Spies

This album is a classic also from 1987 I already own on vinyl and just recently bought for four Euros on CD. I still like the songwriting and the composition. But it also still sounds like a home recording, and Carol Decker's voice certainly shows its limits. However, the songs are so strong and wonderful that I can easily forgive that.

Lambchop is great. :)
I haven't heard the new album yet though (I'm still waiting my pre-order to arrive - the limited edition with the bonus cd :p)
